Is it better to use the guaiac faecal occult blood test (FOBT) or faecal immunochemical test (FIT)?
Scientific studies show that screening with the faecal immunochemical test (FIT) detects more cancers and polyps than the guaiac faecal occult blood test (FOBT) does. However, more colonoscopies are required to detect the additional cancers and polyps. Countries differ in their choice of the bowel cancer screening test according to bowel cancer burden, local resources, and other preferences. It is recommended that you use the screening test adopted in your programme.
