What is hepatitis C?
Hepatitis C is a disease caused by infection with the hepatitis C virus (HCV). Infection with this virus can cause liver damage, liver cancer, and death. The infection may be sudden and short-lived (acute), but in the majority of cases (about 75 out of every 100 people infected) hepatitis C is a long-term (chronic) inflammation of the liver with no noticeable symptoms until the liver has been significantly damaged.
