How common is human papillomavirus (HPV) infection?
HPV infection is very common in adults. Most HPV infections cause no symptoms; so you cannot tell whether you are infected. Up to 50% of people (1 out of 2) will be infected at some time in their lives. In most cases, the virus doesn't do any harm because your immune system gets rid of the infection, but in some cases, the infection doesn't go away and can lead to cancer.
